Esme’s profound passion for history drew her to the ancestral homelands of the Native peoples—the first Americans. She was deeply moved by their enduring spirit and captivated by the richness of their cultural legacy. As she delved deeper into her research, she developed a keen interest in the intricacies of their languages, particularly the challenges of pronunciation and preservation. However, her curiosity soon gave way to sorrow as she uncovered the painful truth of colonization—the destruction of Indigenous communities and the erasure of their traditions, built and treasured over countless generations. From these learnings, the character of Angel and his ancestral lineage were born, inspired by the resilience and depth of the Indigenous tribes she studied. Esme collected insights and observations from Colombians to authentically shape the Costello family. Although she later entered a relationship with a Colombian man, the concept of the Costello family had taken form before they met. He, along with other Colombians, helped deepen her understanding of the culture’s complexities and everyday realities.

I strive to exercise restraint in presenting the knowledge I have acquired, mindful of its weight and the potential discomfort it may cause readers. Within the LEGACY series, I incorporate measured elements of these truths—sufficient to both inform and challenge, without overwhelming the audience.
